Fire Extinguisher Inspection & Recharge
Commercial fire extinguishers need a documented annual service by a qualified technician, plus a quick visual check by your own staff every month. Redbird handles the annual service, the 6-year internal maintenance, hydrostatic testing, recharge, and the tagging that proves it was done.
The work itself
- A physical check of every extinguisher on the property: pressure, seals, pull pins, hoses, horns, and mounting height.
- Verifying each unit is the correct type and rating for the hazard near it. A kitchen line needs a Class K unit; a server room does not want dry chemical.
- Weighing and inspecting cartridges, replacing tamper seals, and recharging any unit that has been discharged or has lost pressure.
- Internal maintenance at 6 years and hydrostatic testing at 12 years for most dry chemical units, tracked so you are not guessing which units are due.
- A dated tag on every extinguisher and a written report listing every unit by location, so an inspector can verify compliance without a scavenger hunt.

Straight answers
- How often does a fire extinguisher need to be inspected in Texas?
- Commercial fire extinguishers need a visual inspection every 30 days by building staff and a full maintenance inspection every 12 months by a qualified technician, per NFPA 10. Beyond that, most dry chemical units need internal maintenance at 6 years and hydrostatic testing at 12 years. Your local AHJ can require more.
- Who can perform the monthly extinguisher check?
- Your own staff can do the monthly visual inspection. It is a check that the extinguisher is present, visible, unobstructed, fully charged, and undamaged. The annual maintenance inspection is different and must be done by a qualified technician.
- What happens if an extinguisher fails inspection?
- It depends on what failed. A low-pressure gauge or a broken seal usually means a recharge. Physical damage, corrosion, or a failed hydrostatic test means the unit is removed from service and replaced. We tell you which it is, and we do not leave a location unprotected while it is sorted out.
